How to Deal with Sin in a Believer’s Life

We often struggle with this issue of committing the same sin again and again. We try hard to push ourselves not to commit sin but end up doing the same even after suffering hardship for a few days or months. We have tried fasting to suppress our fleshly nature and overcome sin. It’s good to fast and seek God’s help in overcoming sin.

I am not against fasting and earnest prayers, but having a divine understanding to deal with sin and sinful thoughts is prominent.

The Bible explicitly says Hosea 4:6.“My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge.”

And Romans 8:10–11 talks about the importance of the Holy Ghost.“But if Christ is in you, then even though your body is subject to death because of sin, the Spirit gives life because of righteousness.” “And if the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead is living in you, he who raised Christ from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies because of his Spirit who lives in you.”

The right way to deal with SIN is as follows: …..

1)  Repentance

2) Breaking the legal right

3) Closing the opened door ( habits)

4) Be filled

Repentance

Confessing with our lips and asking forgiveness makes us free from the judgement because the moment we repent, our gracious Lord Jesus clears our sin as he made a sacrifice once and for all with his precious blood. Hebrews 10:10 “And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.” That doesn’t mean you keep repeating the same sin, as we were purchased with his precious blood.

After committing sin, we directly go for forgiveness because, in Christ, we have the boldness to face the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:16): “Let us then approach God’s throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.” But the challenge is not to commit the same sin again and again.

Breaking the legal right

Now, we have to understand the background, or spiritual realm, and aspects of the potential to sin and the inclination to sin.

Firstly, before committing sin, you opened a door for evil to enter your life, which made you end up acting according to it. It doesn’t mean a believer shouldn’t get sinful thoughts. Yes, it comes, but we should not allow it to bear fruit through us.

So, after committing sin, we ask for forgiveness, which will be done by our Lord Jesus Christ, but our open invitation for satan and open door for satan into our lives are still accessible. Through that sin, we have given a legal right to Satan to enter our lives. So, satan may hit you again and again as long as the door is still open and the invitation is still valid.

In this regard, immediately after repentance, we should confess with our lips that “ satan – we break the legal right that was given to you through this sin in the name of Jesus by his precious blood. The moment you confess this, the opened door and enabled invitation will vanish.

Here, we’re not only seeking forgiveness but also removing the seed that was sown by evil through our invitation. So, evil cannot make you bear fruit from that seed again and again.

Closing the opened door—Habits

Mostly, we open doors for evil through our habits and nature. So, changing our behaviour to align with the Word of God will keep us free from sin.

An example

If you’re addicted to pornography, then follow these steps to overcome that addiction. Firstly, repent and seek God’s help. Second, break your legal rights and now change your lifestyle or behavior. Don’t go for web browsing and mobile usage unless it is essential. Cutting out the accessibility may reduce the desire to see. Sometimes desire can be reduced due to reduced accessibility.

Be Filled

After doing all these steps, the aspect that plays a significant role is being filled with the Word and the Holy Ghost.

The Bible clearly says Matthew 12:44–45. “Then it says, ‘I will return to my house from which I came’; and when it comes, it finds it unoccupied, swept, and put in order.” Then it goes and takes along with it seven other spirits more wicked than itself, and they go in and live there; and the last state of that man becomes worse than the first. That is the way it will also be with this evil generation.

If your heart is not filled with the Word of God and the Holy Spirit, then you’ll again end up committing the same sin again and again because the Word of God activates you to resist the evil thought that hits your mind.
