In a Christian life, the most important aspect of everyday life is prayer. Prayer is an act of our submission to God, and it defines our relationship with God. Prayer plays a vital role, and it is the breath of Christian life.
There are times when we feel low and unable to find a way in the midst of struggles. At those times, prayer enhances our consciousness towards God and gets us connected to Him. Prayer is like communicating with God, wherein we are saying to God, “Oh Lord! I cannot handle this, and I need your intervention in my life.
Let’s see the biblical view of prayer.
Many saints in the Old Testament laid a sound foundation for prayer, which has made their lives more connected to God and solved their problems as well.
If we look at the life of Jesus, he taught us how to pray (Matthew 6:9–13), which we practice now.
But there is an event in the Bible where Jesus prayed before going to face the crucifixion. So, let’s go deep into the context and see the insights.
Luke 22:39-45
1) Pray without ceasing.
“Pray that you will not fall into temptation.”
Jesus is teaching us the importance of this as a mandatory act. Prayer keeps us safe from temptations and problems. While we are connected to God, he will reveal the snares of evil, which helps us overcome them with the help of the Holy Spirit, and He will teach us how to pray and what to pray.
Romans 8:26 “Likewise, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.”
1 Thessalonians 5:16–17 “Rejoice always; pray without ceasing.”
2) Asking and seeking God’s will.
“Father, if you are willing, take this cup from me; yet not my will, but yours be done.”
Jesus is teaching us the importance of seeking God’s will.
We can ask God for all of our needs and requirements, but seeking his will pertaining to our desires and wants is always a better option to take. Sometimes we do not know what it costs to go as per our will and desire. So, going according to his will is the best way to lead life. We can confidently step into his will, as his plans and purpose for our lives are always good.
Jeremiah 29:11 “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”
1 John 5:14–15 “Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us.”
While praying, we have to finish our prayers with the confession, “Oh Lord! Not my will, but yours.”
3) Obedience to His will
“An angel from heaven appeared to him and strengthened him.”
Jesus is teaching us the perspective of the Father God.
While we pray to God about the situations, we face that are hard to handle, God may respond in two ways. Sometimes God responds to our prayers by solving or removing our struggles and hard situations; sometimes he responds to us by strengthening us in the midst of those hard situations.
If that hard time is because of our sin, then God will rescue us from that when we seek him with repentance. Sometimes God allows us to go through a process that makes us able and perfect, wherein we will fulfil his plan for us. Yes, that is what happened in the life of Jesus. While Jesus was praying, God strengthened him to face his will rather than remove that trial.
4) praying friend or praying partner.
“Jesus went out as usual to the Mount of Olives, and his disciples followed him. On reaching the place, he said to them, “
Jesus is teaching us to have a prayer fellowship.
A Christian must have fellowship, especially a praying partner. Always share needs with one another and pray for one another.
Yes, my friend, prayer is not a mere list of our needs and requirements, but seeking his guidance, help, and providence. Prayer is not a tool to get aid from God in difficult situations; it is our lifestyle and our relationship with God.
