The Confidence of Abraham

When we experience a difficult situation in life, we tend to be anxious and worry a lot to resolve the situation. In that hard time, we don’t recall God’s promises for life because we see the promises of God as a generic statement from the Bible. Sometimes God will give a specific promise to our life, even a specific vision that defines the purpose of our life. But we don’t rely on that specific promise from God, and the funniest part is that we try to put in our own efforts to fulfil the promise of God.

Let’s see the life of Abraham, who has received a promise from God (Genesis 12:2): “I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. Here, God has given a confirmation that he is going to establish Abraham greatly.

Now, Abraham is facing an issue with Lot—indeed, a quarrel between their herdsmen. In this context, Abraham says that there should not be strife between us and you are free to go anywhere (Genesis 13: 9). “Is not the whole land before you? Let’s part company. If you go to the left, I’ll go to the right; if you go to the right, I’ll go to the left.” So, Lot has opted for a place that appeared good. “Lot looked around and saw that the whole plain of the Jordan towards Zoar was well watered, like the garden of the Lord, like the land of Egypt. (This was before the Lord destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah.)

Here, we have to meditate on the insight and exercise the precious faith that was shown by Abraham. Abraham received a great promise from God, but while making a decision, he was not trying to work out things that matched the promise, or he was not trying to fulfil God’s promise on his own. He just gave the first option to Lot. Instead of selecting a place like the Garden of the Lord as opted by Lot, he just left the option to Lot. The point is that Abraham is not trying to match his efforts with the promise of God because his faith in God gives him more confidence to rely on God in any situation. He is not of the perspective that whichever direction he goes, God will bless him. But he is confident in God that the direction planned by God will not be taken or opted for by Lot.

Here, the beauty of having faith in God is that if God has planned and promised something for your life that will not be taken away by anyone, his promise to your life will lead you to its fulfilment. Further, though total control and decision-making over your life are in the hands of others, God will still prevail. God makes others work for you and your promises.

Here, we must understand the concept of promise and vision that is from God. If God has given you a specific promise for your life and a vision for the ministry, this is an assurance for your well-being. Because his promise and vision will lead you to fulfilment.

The Bible clearly says,

(Philippians 2:13) “For it is God who works in you to will and to act in order to fulfil his good purpose.”

(Ephesians 3:20)  “Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.”

(1 Thessalonians 5:24) “The one who calls you is faithful, and he will do it.”

(Colossians 1:29) “For this, I toil, struggling with all his energy that he powerfully works within me.”

So, be confident in the promise of God and be led by God.
