Being a believer, we have experienced the miracles of God in our lives pertaining to struggles and sickness, but there are many instances where we have lost hope while expecting a miracle from God. Furthermore, we have left that point of prayer about something that was delayed by God. This often happens when the sickness or struggle grows worse and more severe despite our prayers. Sometimes the repetition of the same struggle may make us exasperated with God. The Israelites did the same thing: they grumbled against God at every hiccup they encountered, failing to remember his wonders along the way.
Today we will learn from a man named Hezekiah, the 13th King of Judah, who has responded to his troubles with faithful prayers, despite threats and nagging.
His approach pleased God and made his requests acceptable in the sight of the Lord. This resulted in a mighty wonder, which comforted Hezekiah and established his kingdom.
2 Kings chapters 18, 19, and 20 —In the days of Hezekiah, he had to confront Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, who challenged him to surrender by surrounding the City of Jerusalem. In order to threaten Hezekiah, he started mocking his belief in God and even exaggerated his strength in comparison with the strength of Hezekiah. Moreover, he tried to make a deal with the people of Judah in a pleasant way, which may have brought compulsion on Hezekiah (2 Kings 18:31–32). Hezekiah,
being a faithful man, sought God for help, and God promised him that the enemy couldn’t harm him. As promised, the enemy left the city of Jerusalem (2 Kings 19:7). But, Hezekiah has to encounter the same thing again. Hezekiah prayed in the house of the Lord and received a promise about his triumph over the enemy (2 Kings 19:32–37) and also that God promised that he would secure the future of Judah (2 Kings 19:29–31).
Again, Hezekiah has to face trouble in his sickness, which confirms his death (2 Kings 20: 1–7). Even in this situation, he sought God for comfort and was accepted by God.
We may wonder why we face so many difficulties as God’s faithful people. We may not know the perspective of God towards us, so our response towards God in the hard times matters a lot. This may make you or break you physically and spiritually.
Likewise, sometimes we face the same problem again and again or back-to-back problems, which may impact our faith and hope in God. Our God is a God of promises who will rescue us from any situation and will secure our future. Being righteous means having unshakeable faith during hard times. Though the situation becomes worse, we have to keep faith and should not refrain from seeking God.
In times of trouble, while waiting for the Lord, evil may try to deceive us by putting a thought as a solution which is against the will of God. This solution seems correct and perfect for the situation. If we surrender to that, then we’ll be ruled over by evil. The same thing happened in the mentioned context when the king of Assyria tried to make a deal with the people of Judah that spoiled their lives if accepted. So, acknowledge the will of God towards our situation and respond accordingly. The Bible clearly says (James 4:7), “Submit yourselves, then, to God.” Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. “
So, always cling to the Lord and his Word. We are well familiar with the verse that says the Word was God (John 1:1). He has promised us that he’ll comfort us in all our distress and struggles. (Isaiah 51:12). I am he who comforts you” and (Deuteronomy 31:8) “The LORD himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.” Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged. “
He is securing our future with a promise that whatever may happen in our lives will end up being good for us. (Jeremiah 29:11) For I know the plans I have for you, declares the LORD, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” And the Apostle Paul says in Romans 8:28 that “all things work together for good for those who are called according to his purpose.”He who comforted Hezekiah is the same God who will comfort us, and he who counted the tears of Hezekiah is the same God who will count our tears (Psalms 56:8).
Moreover, the words of Sennacherib, the king of Assyria, about the God of Israel define the uniqueness of our God, who is all capable and great compared to other man-made idols. Yes, no man-made idol can save people from troubles, but the God of Israel, who is true and has life in him, will save us and comfort us in all our ways. (Jeremiah 10:10) “But the LORD is the true God; he is the living God, the eternal King.”
So, all we have to do is hold on to your faith by meditating on his promises. Depend on God and cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you (1 Peter 5:7).
Do not be doubtful of the promises of God, for his promises are everlasting from the point of creation to the end. (Isaiah 40:8) “The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.”
The Apostle (1 Peter 1:25) Peter says,”But the word of the Lord remains forever. And that word is “the Good News that was preached to you”.
Yes, what has been spoken by God is the same Word that was received through Jesus and reaches from generation to generation to save people and nations.
You and I are saved by the same Word, so do continue your faith by believing the same Word till the end. (Matthew 24:13) But the one who endures to the end will be saved.”
